On October 9, 2019 CoST Afghanistan conducted a capacity building training on transparency in infrastructure sector for the students of Balkh University of Balkh province in the north of the country. University officials, director of economy, Integrity watch Afghanistan members and more than 300 students from the engineering, economic, journalism, law and medical faculties were attended in this event.
The purpose of the training was to familiarize the students about the disclosure portals, methods of getting project information and monitoring of infrastructure projects.
Currently, the information of more than 4000 projects disclosed on government websites. Using of this information helps citizens to identify issues of concern and hold decision makers to account. The students also trained on how to share infrastructure concerns with communities, government entities and ultimately with CoST to be considered in the assurance reports.
‘To supervise infrastructure projects, we need information and fortunately this training helps you on how to get project information. A responsible citizen should not be apathetic about the projects implemented around his/her home. We need to promote community-based monitoring in order to have a sustainable and high-quality infrastructure project”, said professor. Abdul Jabar Shaikh Zadeh, deputy chancellor of Balkh University.
Building the demand for the use of information and Increasing the public engagement in the development of infrastructure project is one of the key objectives of CoST Afghanistan. Such programs will be held in other universities to promote use of information and community-based monitoring of infrastructure projects.
