History of Language and Literature Faculty

The Faculty of Language and Literature was founded in 1366 at the same time as the establishment of Balkh University and with the establishment of Dari Language and Literature Department in 1367, this faculty practically began its scientific activities. In 1369, History Department and English Department were added within the framework of this faculty and it was named Faculty of History and Literature. Also, in 1372, the Department of Uzbek Language and Literature and Journalism were established due to the demand of interested youths and authorities’ necessity for it. Then, Department of Education (psychology and pedagogy subjects) was added to the structure of this faculty and the name of faculty changed to Faculty of Literature and Humanities. In 1372, based on the interest of youths the night shift programs of Dari and English Language and Literature Department began to start. In 1383, through decree of the former president Department of Pashto Language and Literature was established. Similarly, in 1391, the Ministry of Higher Education issued an order to establish the Fine Arts and Archeology Departments. In the same year, according to the development plans of Balkh University, the Department of Journalism and History were upgraded to faculty level and separated from Literature Faculty. Then, In 1391, Arabic Department was established. Beyond that, based on the development programs of faculty in 1391 within the framework of this faculty master’s degree program in the field of Persian-Dari Language and Literature was created and in 1392 it started operating. The Faculty of Language and Literature has the following five departments:

 

1. Dari Language and Literature Department

2. Pashto Language and Literature Department

3. English Language and Literature Department

4. Uzbek Language and Literature Department

5. Arabic Language and Literature Department
